What does continence mean?

Continence is about controlling when you empty your bladder and bowel. Difficulties may involve leaking pee or poo, sudden urgency, or problems emptying. People can experience bladder and bowel problems together.

Common does not mean you must put up with it. An assessment can help identify the cause and possible treatment.

You don’t need the perfect words

Try: “I’m having trouble with my bladder or bowel, and it’s affecting my day. Can we talk about what might help?”

You can write it down, bring someone you trust, or ask for privacy. Tell the clinician about any communication, access, cultural or personal needs. Your symptoms do not make you dirty, childish or less deserving of respect.

Good information. Real support.
